Call for Extended Abstracts

The Vienna young Scientists Symposium (VSS), which takes place on June 25-26, 2020 for the sixth time, is an innovative platform for the professional exchange of knowledge between young researchers of TU Wien beyond the borders of institutes and faculties. Young scientists are going to present their research activities in presentations, poster sessions and exhibits in an interdisciplinary comprehensive way during the symposium. Consisting of four mini-symposia, the symposium has an overall theme of "Technology, Science, and Design for a Sustainable World". The themes of the mini-symposia are:

  • Innovative Materials and Green Chemistry
  • Energy and Resource Engineering
  • Sustainable Buildings, Cities and Infrastructures
  • Environmental Analysis and Modeling

All scientific staff and students of TU Vienna are cordially invited to participate in this event as speakers. Please submit a two page Extended Abstract (in English language), independently of your level of research by March 29, 2020, if your research is linked to one of the four fields mentioned above. Templates for LaTeX and Microsoft Word are available at under Extended Abstract. Please cover the following points in your abstract:

  • Idea and motivation of your research
  • Summary of your research
  • Interfacing areas between your research and the research fields of your group / institute / scientific community
  • Results
  • Outlook to expected results

All abstracts will be peer-reviewed by professors from the respective research field. The reviewers decide, if the work is presented as a 15 minute talk or a 5 minute talk which includes a poster or exhibit. For the first time at VSS 2020, highlighted presentations will be selected from the submitted abstracts, that describe special methods* that could be particularly interesting for collaborations in the research area. Participants are therefore encouraged to include a thorough methodology section in their abstracts. If you intend to apply for a highlight presentation, please take care that you state this upon submitting your abstract (by ticking the corresponding checkbox). All accepted abstracts are collected and published in a proceedings book of abstracts. More information and important dates can be found on this website.

*A method, within this context, is meant to be a research tool available at TU Wien that might be especially interesting for several participants of the VSS, as it might be applied within their research. Such research tools might be specific instrumentation (e.g. microscopes, spectrometers, (pilot) plants, …), analysis tools or software. Only methods that might be available to or are open for general use by researchers from TU Wien will be eligible for presentation in highlight method contributions. Methods can still be presented even if they might be available to users only after introductory courses or through payment.

The participation is free of charge for all speakers and guests.
The organisation team is looking forward to many submissions and participants.
